Responsive design is an approach to web design aimed at crafting websites with optimal viewing and interaction, including easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling, across a wide range of devices from desktop computer screens to mobile phones.

Responsive design has become even more important as the amount of mobile traffic has skyrocketed, now accounting for more than half of total internet traffic. In 2015, Google began to boost the ratings of sites that were mobile-friendly when searches were made from a mobile device such as a smartphone. This creates the net effect of penalizing websites that are not mobile-friendly.
